Harry Duquesne Markell (born Makowsky) was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the St. Louis Browns (1951). Duke, his nickname, was the fourth player from France to play in the majors — the first to pitch — joining Paul Krichell (1911), Claude Gouzzie (1903), and Joe Woerlin (1895).

Did you know that Duke Markell spent thirteen seasons in the minors, toeing the mound in 513 games, posting a 144-127 record, a 3.41 ERA, and 1,521 career strikeouts? Duke never appeared on a regular-issue baseball card (image below is a custom card), but he did toss 114 complete games, 14 shutouts, and three no-hitters!
